GALLAZ-MASSY CHAMBER DUET
BEFORE
Bertrand Gallaz and Pierre-François Massy met in 1984, the year in which they gave several concerts as a trio with drummer Olivier Clerc, interpreting Ornette Coleman’s compositions in a creative and libertarian way.
In 2015 the two musicians met again to elaborate as a duo a more diversified repertoire, illustrated by a few “house” recordings whose musical quality encouraged them to continue and deepen their work.
NOW
The repertoire is made up of original pieces and covers coming from many horizons: Ornette Coleman always, Thelonious Monk, but also Swiss or American popular music, songs or television series.
These numerous pieces of contrasting lengths are organized in mini-sets of 2 to 5 compositions, in order to develop the narrative aspect of the concert, thus making them pieces in several movements. The assemblies are organized according to tonalities, contrasts of rhythms or colors, their homogeneity or on the contrary, the effect of surprise or humor generated by the juxtaposition.
The two musicians tried to appropriate these reprises as much as possible, with the objective of reinventing them and developing a personal and original language and color.
The concretization of this work was possible thanks to the engagement for four concerts at the ABΠ gallery in Lausanne in the context of an exhibition dedicated to the artist, Suzanna Pattoni.
This recording is thus a faithful reflection of these concerts given in Lausanne in October 2020.

Born in Lausanne in 1957
In 1983, birth of the band Intraphonic. Several concerts and radios, opening act for Defunkt in Montreux.
In 1984, he put together the Gallaz-Clerc-Massy trio with Olivier Clerc and Pierre-François Massy, interpreting a repertoire of Ornette Coleman, one of his main sources of inspiration along with James Brown, to whom he paid a tribute by creating the group Soul Syndrom in 1987. Played on Pascal Auberson’s album Ange Rebelle, as well as on the CD “Power Jazz” of the group Urgent Feel, and participated in some of their concerts. Composed the music for the theater show “L’ Arbre Des Tropiques” by Yukio Mishima directed by Eiji Mihara of the Béjart Ballet Lausanne. Played the guitars for the soundtrack of the film “Kadogo L’Enfant Soldat” by Nicolas Wadimoff.
In 1991, creation of the Bertrand Gallaz Bare Bone Power Trio, and in early 1992 he opened for Ronald Shannon Jackson’s Decoding Society in Switzerland.
In 1993, Jean-Paul Bourelly asked him to open for his “Blue Wave Bandits”, and the same year saw the birth of the CD “Talk To You In A Minute” with Shannon Jackson as special guest. In the summer of 1993, he played at the Montreux Jazz Festival on the stage of the Miles Davis Hall, and on the big stage of the Willisau Jazz Festival.
In 1997, released the CD “Sweet & Sour” in solo except for a duet with Jean-Paul Bourelly. He then played in Geneva with Jean-Paul Bourelly’s Boom Bop.
In 1999, release of the CD “Next Door” in duet with the lap steel player Patrice Dessauges. Played with the band Fool Groove a repertoire entirely dedicated to the mythical funk band of New Orleans, the Meters. Joined the band MIP (Made In Positive) and composed their original repertoire.
In 2009, played with Shannon Jackson’s Decoding Society in Fort Worth, Texas. Composed the repertoire of the band Phat Strut. Several concerts in Austin, Texas with the singer LZ Love.
In 2015, beginning of the Gallaz-Massy Chamber Duet.
In 2017, paid a tribute to Léon Francioli in Biasca (Switzerland), with the quartet Ciao Léon.

Born in Lausanne in 1955.
Started playing the double bass in 1974. Classical studies at the Conservatoire de Lausanne: from 1975 to 1985 in the class of Francis Marcellin (1st prize for virtuosity with congratulations), and from 1990 to 1991 in the class of Yoan Goilav (concert license).
Solo double bass with the Orchestre des Rencontres Musicales (Lausanne), and since 1988 with the Geneva Chamber Orchestra.
Substitutions to the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande and to the Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne.
Concerts with the Sinfonietta of Lausanne, the Ensemble Contrechamps and the Ensemble Vocal et Instrumental de Lausanne.
Guest soloist with the Lausanne Chamber Orchestra (Divertimento Concertante by Nino Rota) and the Orchestre des Rencontres Musicales (Episodie by Jost Meier).
Accompanied many singers, among them Michel Buzzi, Dominique Scheder, Yvette Théraulaz (numerous concerts in Europe and Quebec from 1981 to 1984), Michel Bühler, Pascal Auberson.
Was part of the Grand Orchestre de la RTSR during the final of the Eurovision Song Contest, and for several years of the Groupe Instrumental Romand (Jazz-Group of the RTSR).

Bertrand Gallaz et Pierre-François Massy se sont rencontrés en 1984, année au cours de laquelle ils ont donné plusieurs concerts en trio avec le batteur Olivier Clerc, interprétant de façon créative et libertaire les compositions d’Ornette Coleman. En 2015 les deux musiciens se sont retrouvés pour élaborer en duo un répertoire plus diversifié, illustré par quelques enregistrements « maison » dont la qualité musicale les a incités à continuer et approfondir leur travail.
MAINTENANT
Le répertoire est constitué de pièces originales et de reprises venant de nombreux horizons : Ornette Coleman toujours, Thelonious Monk, mais aussi musique populaire suisse ou américaine, chanson ou série télévisée.
Ces nombreuses pièces de longueurs contrastées sont organisées en mini-sets de 2 à 5 compositions, afin de développer l’aspect narratif du concert, d’en faire ainsi des pièces en plusieurs mouvements. Les assemblages sont organisés en fonction des tonalités, des contrastes de rythmes ou de couleurs, de leur homogénéité, ou au contraire de l’effet de surprise ou de l’humour généré par la juxtaposition.
Les deux musiciens ont cherché à s’approprier le plus possible ces reprises, avec l’objectif de les réinventer et de développer langage et couleur personnels et originaux.
La concrétisation de ce travail a pu se faire grâce à un engagement pour quatre concerts à la galerie Abπ de Lausanne dans le cadre d’une exposition consacrée à l’artiste Suzanna Pattoni.
Cet enregistrement est ainsi le fidèle reflet de ces concerts donnés à Lausanne en octobre 2020.

Contrebasse solo de l’Orchestre des Rencontres Musicales (Lausanne), puis dès 1988 de L’Orchestre de Chambre de Genève.
Remplacements à l’Orchestre de la Suisse Romande et à l’Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne.
Concerts avec le Sinfonietta de Lausanne, l’Ensemble Contrechamps et l’Ensemble Vocal et Instrumental de Lausanne.
Soliste invité par l’Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne (Divertimento Concertante de Nino Rota) et l’Orchestre des Rencontres Musicales (Episodie de Jost Meier).

Forme en 1983 le groupe Intraphonic. Plusieurs concerts et radios, première partie de Defunkt à Montreux.
En 1984, il forme le trio Gallaz-Clerc-Massy avec Olivier Clerc et Pierre-François Massy, interprétant un répertoire d’Ornette Coleman, une de ses principales sources d’inspiration avec James Brown, auquel il rend hommage en créant en 1987 le groupe Soul Syndrom. Joue sur le disque « Ange Rebelle » de Pascal Auberson, ainsi que sur le CD « Power Jazz » du groupe Urgent Feel, et participe à quelques-uns de leurs concerts. Compose la musique du spectacle de théâtre « L’ Arbre Des Tropiques » de Yukio Mishima mis en scène par Eiji Mihara du Béjart Ballet Lausanne. Joue les guitares de la bande son du film « Kadogo L’Enfant Soldat » de Nicolas Wadimoff.
Forme en 1991 le Bertrand Gallaz Bare Bone Power Trio, et assure début 1992 la première partie des concerts du Ronald Shannon Jackson’s Decoding Society en Suisse.
En 1993, Jean-Paul Bourelly lui demande d’assurer la première partie de ses « Blue Wave Bandits », et la même année voit la naissance du CD « Talk To You In A Minute » avec Shannon Jackson comme special guest.
Joue durant l’été 1993 au Montreux Jazz Festival sur la scène du Miles Davis Hall, et sur la grande scène du Willisau Jazz Festival.
En 1997, il sort le CD « Sweet & Sour » en solo à l’exception d’un duo avec Jean-Paul Bourelly. Joue ensuite à Genève avec Jean-Paul Bourelly’s Boom Bop.
En 1999, sortie du CD « Next Door » en duo avec le lap steel player Patrice Dessauges. Joue avec le groupe Fool Groove un répertoire entièrement consacré au mythique funk band de New Orleans, les Meters. Rejoins le groupe MIP (Made In Positive) et compose leur répertoire original.
En 2009, joue avec Shannon Jackson’s Decoding Society à Fort Worth, Texas. Compose le répertoire du groupe Phat Strut. Plusieurs concerts à Austin, Texas avec la chanteuse LZ Love.
Forme en 2015 le duo Gallaz-Massy Chamber Duet.
En 2017, hommage à Léon Francioli à Biasca (Suisse), avec le quartet Ciao Léon.

PIERRE-FRANÇOIS MASSY contrebasse
Né à Lausanne en 1955.
Débute la contrebasse en 1974. Etudes classiques au Conservatoire de Lausanne: de 1975 à 1985 dans la classe de Francis Marcellin (1er prix de virtuosité avec félicitations), et de 1990 à 1991 dans la classe de Yoan Goilav (licence de concert).
Contrebasse solo de l’Orchestre des Rencontres Musicales (Lausanne), puis dès 1988 de L’Orchestre de Chambre de Genève.
Remplacements à l’Orchestre de la Suisse Romande et à l’Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne.
Concerts avec le Sinfonietta de Lausanne, l’Ensemble Contrechamps et l’Ensemble Vocal et Instrumental de Lausanne.
Soliste invité par l’Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne (Divertimento Concertante de Nino Rota) et l’Orchestre des Rencontres Musicales (Episodie de Jost Meier).
A accompagné de nombreux chanteurs, parmi lesquels Michel Buzzi, Dominique Scheder, Yvette Théraulaz (nombreux concerts en Europe et au Québec de 1981 à 1984), Michel Bühler, Pascal Auberson.
A fait partie du Grand Orchestre de la RTSR lors de la finale du concours Eurovision de la chanson, et pendant plusieurs années du Groupe Instrumental Romand (Jazz-Group de la RTSR).
Nombreux concerts de jazz en Europe et aux USA.
Avec François Lindemann, a croisé Alvin Queen, Daniel Humair, Butch Morris, quartet avec Pierre Favre et Pascal Auberson, Piano Seven.
Avec Pierre Favre au sein de son European Chambre Ensemble: Roberto Ottaviano, Michel Godard, Vincent Courtois, Gabriele Mirabassi.
Avec les Bâlois Michael et Florian Arbenz: Glenn Ferris, Greg Osby, Wolfgang Puschnig.
Mais encore Art Lande, Franco Ambrosetti, Jacques Demierre, René Bottlang, Michel Wintsch, Charles Gayle, Olivier Clerc, Léon Francioli, Sylvie Bourban.
A représenté la Suisse au sein du Big-Band de l’Union Européenne de Radiodiffusion en 1986.
De 1993 à 2003 il est le leader et compositeur du sextet Rosetta avec Matthieu Michel, Yves Massy, Daniel Perrin, Christian Graf et Marcel Papaux.
Bénéficiaire en 2000 d’une commande de composition pour Rosetta de la part de la Fondation Pro Helvetia.
Enseigne depuis 1986 à l’Ecole de Jazz et de Musique Actuelle (EJMA) de Lausanne.
