TELEMANN: SOLOS & TRIO SONATAS FOR RECORDER
Telemann’s music represents the combination of elements from the «maniera italiana» (lyrical, singing style in arioso cantilenas and ebullient, joyful acrobatics in virtuoso passages) with the French bon goût. Nearly all of Telemann’s compositions are characterized by this «goût mêlé», this «mixed taste», from his opulent orchestral suites to his chamber music compositions for small ensembles.
This recording features a representative selection of works from his repertoire for recorder. They range from the formal settings of four-movement sonatas to freely conceived fantasies for flatuo solo. A number of slow, lyrical pieces embody the ideals of the Italian bel canto, whereas daring solo passages reflect the models of Italian violin virtuosos.
The movements with a dance-like character, on the other hand, illustrate the French influences, and fugato pieces in which imitative counterpoint is employed call forth Telemann’s German contrapuntal heritage. A number of movements also vividly portray the composer’s more humorous side (such as the Spirituoso from the Fantasia in E minor).
These brilliant Baroque masterpieces are performed by Swiss recorder virtuoso Maurice Steger and the Baroque Continuo Consort led by Naoki Kitaya.

Johann Mattheson le critique musical le plus prolifique de l’époque déclarait «nous pouvons applaudir Lully et porter aux nues Corelli, mais seul Telemann est au-dessus de tout éloge».
La musique de Telemann représente une combinaison d’éléments tirés de la «maniera italiana» (lyrisme, style chantant dans des cantilènes ariosos et acrobatique, joyeux et exubérant dans les passages virtuoses) et du bon goût français. Cet enregistrement offre une sélection représentative de ses œuvres pour flûte à bec. Elles vont des sonates formelles à quatre mouvements aux fantaisies libres pour flauto solo. Un certain nombre de pièces lentes et lyriques incarnent l’idéal du bel canto italien, alors que des solos audacieux reflètent les modèles des virtuoses du violon italien.
D’autre part les mouvements de caractère dansant illustrent l’influence française et les pièces en fugato, dans lesquelles on trouve un contrepoint imitatif, font ressortir l’héritage contrapuntique allemand de Telemann. Un certain nombre de mouvements nous donnent un portrait vivant de son côté plus enclin à l’humour (tel que le Spirituoso de la Fantaisie en mi mineur).
Ces chefs-d’œuvre baroques brillants sont interprétés par le virtuose suisse de la flûte à bec Maurice Steger accompagné par le Baroque Continuo Consort dirigé par Naoki Kitaya.

Telemann verbindet in seiner Musik die maniera italiana mit all ihrer Gesanglichkeit in ariosen Cantilenen und überschwenglichen Spielfreude in akrobatisch virtuosen Passagen mit dem französischen bon goût. Fast alle seine Kompositionen tragen die Kennzeichen dieses «goût mêlé», des «vermischten Geschmacks» – von den opulenten Orchestersuiten bis zu den kleiner besetzten Stücken der Kammermusik.
Die vorliegende Aufnahme bietet einen repräsentativen Einblick in Telemanns Repertoire für Blockflöte, das von formal angelegten viersätzigen Sonaten bis zu freier konzipierten Fantasien für flauto solo reicht. Zahlreiche langsame, betont lyrische Stücke entsprechen dem Ideal des italienischen bel canto, wogegen sich einige halsbrecherische Solopassagen am Vorbild italienischer Violinvirtuosen orientieren.
