Nicolas Altstaedt: Schumann; Tchaikowsky & Gulda

Like violinists Alexandra Soumm and Liviu Prunaru; baritone Herman Wallén; harpist Emmanuel Ceysson and pianist Joseph Moog in preceding years; French-German cellist Nicolas Altstaedt has been selected from a group of young soloists at the festival Sommets Musicaux de Gstaad 2008 to make a recording with orchestra financed by the manifestation’s principal partner; the Edmond de Rothschild Private Bank.

A student of Boris Pergamenchikov (Altstaedt was one of the last to profit from his mastery); the artist of 27 years already is active internationally – notably; he is one of the very few European musicians to have been selected by the Lincoln Center Chamber Music Society in New York to perform in its concert series and tours. He has chosen two virtuoso works from the 19th century (Schumann’s Cello Concerto and Tchaikowsky’s Rococo Variations) as well as Friedrich Gulda’s fascinating Concerto for Cello and Wind Band for his first recording with orchestra.

This is a very promising calling card; made hand in hand with conductor Alexander Joel and the Deutsche Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz. It is likewise a beautiful homage to the founder of Claves Records; Marguerite Dütschler-Huber; who initiated this undertaking; and which since her passing in June 2006 has been christened the “Marguerite Dütschler Prize”.

Nicolas Altstaedt was born in 1982 of German -French parents, and was one of Boris Pergamenschikow's last pupils.

Nicolas Altstaedt, sponsored by the Orpheum Foundation, gave a highly acclaimed debut performance right at the beginning of the 2007/08 season with the Tonhalle-Orchester Zurich under Neville Marriner. Furthermore, he performed with the Kremerata Baltica, the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra, Zurich Chamber Orchestra, Bamberg Symphony Orchestra, the Musikkollegium Winterthur, the New Zealand, Melbourne and Adelaide Symphony Orchestras, the Berlin and Helsinki Radio Orchestras. He also stood in at short notice for Jean-Guihen Queyras, interpreting Elgar's Cello Concerto with the RSO Stuttgart under Sir Roger Norrington. He has been selected by the Lincoln Center Chamber Music Society in New York as one of the few European artists to take part in their 2009-2012 Concert seasons and tours.

He has played in concert with Gidon Kremer, Yuri Bashmet, Alexander Lonquich, Jörg and Carolin Widmann, the Quatuor Ebène, Daniel Hope, Emanuel Pahud, Bayan player Elsbeth Moser, has worked with composers Thomas Ades, Wilhelm Killmayer, Lera Auerbach, Sofia Gubaidulina, and gets invited to the most important concert venues in Europe, USA, Australia and Asia.

Nicolas Altstaedt, who has often been distinguished with international prizes (First Prizes of the German Music Competition , Domnick Cello Competition 2005, Adam International Cello Competition in New Zealand), is a regular guest at festivals such as Lockenhaus, Jerusalem, Sommets Musicaux, as well as at the Ludwigsburger Schlossfestspielen and the Klavierfestival Ruhr. In summer 2008 he made a successful debut at the Salzburger Festspielen.
"Nicolas Altstaedt is already much more than promising" said STRAD magazine, who crowned his debut CD for the GENUIN label "Selection of the Month" in December 2007. A further CD came out for the same label, with the bayan player Elsbeth Moser, which was highly acclaimed by the press. In 2009, for the Haydn Year, he will record both Cello Concertos with the Potsdamer Kammerakademie under Michael Sanderling, and produce a recital CD with first performances of Vincent d'Indy, a.o.

Nicolas Altstaedt plays a Nicolas Lupot Cello (Paris 1821) loaned to him by the German Foundation of Musical Life (Deutsche Stiftung Musikleben).

Né en 1982 dans une famille franco-allemande, Nicolas Altstaedt compte parmi les derniers élèves de Boris Pergamenchikov.

Il vient en outre de remplacer Jean-Guihen Queyras dans le Concerto d’Elgar avec l’Orchestre radio-symphonique de Stuttgart. Il est l’un des rares musiciens européens à avoir été choisi par la Lincoln Center Chamber Music Society de New York pour se produire dans ses séries de concerts et des tournées entre 2009 et 2012.

Lauréat de nombreux concours (Prix du Deutsches Musikwettbewerb, 1er Prix du Concours de violoncelle Domnick 2005, 1er Prix de l’Adam International Cello Competition en Nouvelle-Zélande), il est l’hôte régulier de festivals tels que Lockenhaus, Jérusalem, les Sommets Musicaux de Gstaad, de même que les Ludwigsburger Schlossfestspielen et le Festival de piano de la Ruhr. Il a fait des débuts retentissants aux Salzburger Festspiele durant l’été 2008.
«Nicolas Altstaedt is already much more than promising», a écrit le magazine Strad, qui a récompensé son premier CD paru l’an dernier chez GENUIN d’une «Selection of the Month 12/07».

Un nouveau CD est paru chez GENUIN avec l’accordéoniste Elsbeth Moser, fort bien accueilli par la presse spécialisée. A l’occasion des célébrations Haydn, les deux concertos pour violoncelle sortiront en 2009 avec la Potsdamer Kammerakademie dirigée par Michael Sanderling. Un récital est également en préparation avec entre autres des œuvres jamais enregistrées de Vincent d'Indy.

Nicolas Altstaedt joue un violoncelle de Nicolas Lupot (Paris 1821) prêté par la Deutsche Stiftung Musikleben.
