Ernö Dohnanyi hat sein erstes Quintett seinem großen Vorbild Johannes Brahms gewidmet. Das Frühwerk trägt viele Brahms’sche Züge: ein kompakter Klang, dunkel gefärbt, in heiter-melancholische Stimmungen getaucht. Das Trio ‘Nota Bene’ lässt uns vor allem aber an der jugendlichen Frische der Musik teilhaben: mit schönem, lyrischem Schmelz im tief-romantischen Allegro-Kopfsatz und einem unbeschwerten, belebten Musizieren im Scherzo. Über all dem steht ein wunderbar kommunikatives Spiel. ‘Nota Bene’ und seine beiden Gastmusiker verstehen sich blind – Kammermusik auf höchstem Niveau.
Ohne diese gemeinsame Lesart wäre eine adäquate Interpretation des reiferen Quintetts in es-Moll nicht denkbar. Die veränderte Sprache Dohnanyis, seine wesentlich expressivere Musik braucht derart ausdrucksstarke Deuter, die seine Komposition zu einem intensiven Erlebnis werden lassen.
Dohnanyi’s first Piano Quintet still has a spirit of youthfulness which is well reflected in this charismatic performance. The second one is more mature and expressive, and the five musicians project the music with great understanding and much intensity.
